A Guide to Nerd Guys Meeting and Dating Women: Introduction
So if you have been reading my blog you will know that for the most part I have been writing about what’s going on or about whatever’s crossed my mind. But recently I’ve been thinking about where to take my blog in an “organized” manner. I was talking with a friend last night and was reminded of one thing I can share with my nerd friends, and that is meeting women.
“Wait a minute” I am sure you are thinking. “Don’t most of your blogs and shirt descriptions talk about how you didn’t date at all in high school or college and are constantly being rejected?” That is pretty much true (this Buffy t-shirt from the television show t shirts is a good example of this) but I the truth is I am qualified to speak on this subject for two reasons:
1. The best way to learn something it to fail at it. I learn to be a better Warhammer player more from losing games than winning them. The best way to learn something is the hard way, and trust me, when it comes to dating I have done everything the hard way.
2. Most of those stories is about me getting rejected after dating someone for a while. The fact is I am actually good at meeting women and getting them to go out with me a couple times. The problem is I am a lousy boyfriend and get dumped by them all. So if you are looking for advice on how to maintain a happy relationship you will have to go somewhere else, as I am not at all qualified.
So I will give you my hard earned tips in hopes that you will glean something and potentially procreate, as I am afraid the human race is breeding itself to stupidity as an Idiocracy.
Next post: How I got mixed up in this.
Star Trekked Out
I have been working an a whole slew of new Star Trek t-shirts and am starting to burn out on them. I do have a huge tolerance for Star Trek but even I have my capacity. I think I will let them sit until tomorrow. Maybe I need to just watch some more Firefly (the image comes from my personal collection of great Firefly tshirts).
Going to see Kick Ass again tomorrow, I think. I have some guys who want to go, but another friend of mine wants to go see it in the city and I think I am more inclined to go with her. I see those guys every week.
I just got my first shipment of lunch boxes, coffee mugs, and drinking glasses. I need to figure out how to ship them. Another great weekend project. I also think I found the display units I want to use for our next trade show, but I don’t know if they will arrive in time. We’ll see.
Anyway, that’s it. Still have a ton of work to do. Talk to you all soon.
Buzz Aldrin on the Howard Stern show this morning
So I was listening to Stern this morning and he had a great hero, not just for America, but the human race, Buzz Aldrin on for a candid interview. The guys who made it to the moon were the first step towards mine and every thinking nerd’s dream of getting off this rock we call home.
Unfortunately, our current administration has opted to no longer pursue the space program, the one decision I most strongly disagree with. In order to keep the morons of this country happy in the short term they are selling out the human race’s long term benefit. I know I have bitched about this before, but if you could get a letter or email sent to the president (www.whitehouse.gov) in support of NASA that would be very cool. I just sent another one.
Anyway, in the spirit of space exploration I have shown a picture for Forbidden Planet from the movie t shirt section. Great movie, if you haven’t seen it.
Reasons why TOS is better than Next Gen
I just got a shipment that included a couple of Star Trek Next Generation t shirts and I am feeling a little guilty. I know there are Next Gen fans and I am risking alienating those fans, but I have to admit I am a hard core TOS fan.
Whenever someone starts telling me how much better Next Gen is over TOS it always seems to boil down to better special effects. No kidding. You think a sci fi show produced 25 years later might have better effects? That’s like saying the Buck Rogers from the 80’s is better than the one from the 20’s due to the special effects. Thanks, Capt. Obvious.
I have enjoyed episodes of Next Gen, but the fact is the stories are far more bland and politically correct than TOS. The Original Series did some stories that were totally risque and could have gotten them into real trouble. For example, did you know the very first televised interracial kiss was on an episode of TOS? There were stories about racism, nuclear war, age relations, mind expansion, and any number of other troublesome subjects. On of my favorite scenes of all time has to be when the two aliens who were black on one side and white on the other (Episode 70: Let That Be Your Last Battlefield). The great line from Commissioner Bele was “I am black on the right side. Lokai is white on the right side. All his people are white on the right side.” This was his people’s reason for the race war the were in. Next Gen, on the other hand, had stories that more or less were tame “Save the environment” themes and the like.
Also, there is not a single character on TOS I don’t like. They are like the friends I always wanted to have as a kid (my imaginary friends image comes from the funny t shirt category). Next Gen has a few engaging characters but many that bug me. I like Data, Warf, Geordie, and to an extent Picard, but fat bearded cool guy Riker, too-good-for-a-uniform Counselor Troy (I don’t care if she’s Gene Roddenberry niece or whatever), and hired-for-lame-youth-appeal Westley Crusher should have all been sucked out of an airlock episode 1. Also, while I like Capt. Picard, it’s now 400 years into the future. Whatever happened to the Hair Club for Men? He could not only be president and member, but secretary, treasurer, master at arms, and sweep up after the meetings. Finally, that blond security officer who died and came back also bugged the hell out of me to the point that I refuse to look up her name.
The only cool thing Next Gen did in it’s entire run was introduce the Borg. However, the Borg were much more interesting in Voyager, in my opinion.
V returns?
Not V for Vendetta (which is an insanely cool movie and one that I keep hoping to find t shirts for) but V, the tv invasion serious. I guess ABC saw what happened with Battlestar Galactica and opted to cash in.
The thing is, I don’t recall the original V as being all that engaging or interesting, and I also don’t recall ABC as having a staff of writers who know anything about science fiction. It also seems they suffer from the same moronic executive pool that Fox draws from, as some executive (head of the company or something. It think it was Stephen McPherson) opted to bury Masters of Science Fiction and cut it short. This serious could have been great.
Who knows. Maybe ABC will impress me somehow. I have my doubts. I also have issues with aliens who look like humans. All aliens should look like Alien (as seen on this shirt from the movie t shirt section) or something equally weird. If HR Giger is not involved in the design I doubt it could look good.
Anyway, I will probably watch it, but won’t go out of my way for it. Not hearing a ton on it. That being said, I think I will watch V for Vendetta tonight on DvD.
Happy Birthday, Leonard Nimoy
Yes, Mr. Spock is 79 years old today. I wish him well. Mr. Spock was a big influence on my life as a kid. I kept wishing I were a Vulcan, where being logical and scientific was a sexy thing rather than just nerdy. I have this shirt here from my funny t shirt collection.
I am a little burned out on working today. Somehow I spent all day on three shirts. Not sure where the day went. I do know I now have a lifetime supply of Scotch tape (Office Depot had a buy-two-get-one-free deal on four packs of tape, so somehow I left with 12 rolls of Scotch tape. Sometimes I am a sucker).
Tomorrow is terrain day. That is, my gaming club gets together at someones house and builds terrain for our big Warhammer tournament later this summer. Normally we get 8-10 guys, but a lot of the regulars guys are at Adepticon in Chicago so this time it falls upon those of us without the time, inclination, or money to fly out there.
Help save NASA please!
So I read yesterday that Obama is gutting the space exploration in favor of all the other lame stuff our government does, and I am really freaked out. Space exploration is the only thing the US government does that I support wholeheartedly. We absolutely have to get off this rock and onto other planets. Even the moon would be great, just like in the last Trasnformers movie (Transfomers image courtesy of the Transformers t shirt category)
Honestly, there are very logical (haw) reasons to keep pushing the space program besides my personal desire to meet green women. First and foremost, control of the world will fall unto the country that controls the gravity well. The Chinese are actively working on it, and the Russians as well. If we give up the space race in pursuit of a health plan that is probably going to suck anyway it might look good for a few years, but 20 years from now when the Chinese are threatening to drop asteroids on our heads (for the record, an asteroid dropped from orbit can hit with pinpoint precision and can impact with the force of several thermonuclear bombs) we are really going to regret it.
Furthermore, at some point we are going to have to get some of our population off of this planet. Large orbital living stations and moon bases could easily be in our future and help us with excess population control.
I wrote a letter to the White House and got a kind of bland response about how hard Obama is working on health care and nothing on my concerns about NASA. Please help the human race by sending him an email here. If enough of us do it maybe we can swing him back to believing in our future.
Another bad night of WOW
Another bad night for WOW. My DPS keeps improving, but everyone else is increasing more. I am behind the curve, and will not catch up doing our regular raids. I need to do some work on my own, and really don’t have the time. I think I will have to put raiding on the back burner for a while.
The fact is I don’t really have time for much at all besides this site. I really need to get my Skaven army fixed and painted by June and I have not picked up a brush in weeks. I think I have the list I like but have to work on the actual models.
The thing I love about painting is I can just throw a whole season of a TV show on the DvD player and sort of not listen. I still enjoy it immensely, and find it really relaxing. I have been looking at Stargate SG1 again, but think I will switch it up for the Walking Dead. I wish the SG1 shirts did better, as think they are really cool, but they kind of languish in the tv t shirt section getting very little love. This Walking Dead t shirt is very cool.
