RWBY
I’ve been a fan of Rooster Teeth productions since pretty much the beginning. This was the early days of internet content, around 2003, when their “Halo” comedy series “Red Vs Blue” already finished their first season and was working on 2. I loved everything about the wacky cast of NSFW trash-talking violent sociopaths in the military IN SPACE and as of 2013, the show is still going strong and released on Netflix.
Then, a couple weeks ago I saw a rated TV-PG animated show called “RWBY” (pronounced Ruby) starring an anime-esque (Attack on Titan T Shirt from our anime selection) group of teen girls in color coded outfits (Red, White, Black and Yellow) added to Netflix. As the parent of a small child missing the freshly over Avatar: the Legend of Korra, I wanted to see if it was any good. I found out that RWBY was also made by Rooster Teeth and that it was the brainchild of 33 year old creator, Monty Oum.
Unfortunately, I found this out because tragically, Monty Oum passed away a week ago after having a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics. The show is fantastic, for any age group or to watch as a family (aside from some Princess Mononoke-like monster blood and violence). The characters are instantly relatable, especially if you play D&D, and the dialog has the signature rapid-fire hilarity that RT is known for with none of the creative profanity.
So if you’re into CGI that looks hand-drawn, fun and funny fantasy, cute girls (and guys) who kick ass and family-friendly action that is well-choreographed and emotionally charged, please check out RWBY on Netflix streaming or on the Rooster Teeth home site. RIP Monty Oum. You were brilliant and generous.
Star Trek Retrospective: Episode 26 Errand of Mercy
This is an episode I kind of like but kind of don’t really care a lot about. All it resulted in was a peace treaty and the set up for the Trouble With Tribbles. The Organians as super powerful energy beings honestly got kind of boring once you learn who they really are. The only real fun was watching Kirk and Kor verbally spar and treat the peace loving Organians with absolute contempt for their unwillingness to kill people. Also, what is the deal with the letter K? Kirk, Kor, Kang, Khan. Is that the recommended letter for future Star Trek Alpha males in the Roddenberry universe?
I supposed one cool thing was the idea of so powerful a being shown as so innocuous. Usually when we think powerful we see something like the guy on this Attack on Titan t shirt but really the powerful people in the universe are usually the ones you least expect. In comic books it’s always the brainy villains who are the most dangerous. You can avoid Killer Krok but Joker is not to be messed with. It’s not always about obvious brawn.

Star Trek Retrospective: Episdoe 31 Who Mourns for Adonais #StarTrek
I’ve always had a warm spot for this episode. It a weird way it really makes sense, and the tragedy of Adonais at the end of the show really tugs at you. Plus it’s one of those great episodes where the crew have to do something horrible that they later feel bad about it like when Kirk had to let Edith Keeler die in the City on the Edge of Forever. The best line in the show was McCoy saying “I wish we hadn’t had to do this” after they burned down the temple.
It was also a very cool use of the horrible special effects they had back then. I remember looking at this episode as a kid and really believing that Adonias was holding the Enterprise in his hand, or that he really did grow up huge and fade to nothing. People who say TNG is better then TOS because of the special effects are idiots. That’s like saying an iPhone is better then a retro 70’s rotary phone. The phone might suck, but in 1970 it was state of the art. Also phones back then could be used as deadly blunt instrument and more than one person was strangled with the cords. They made those old phones to last.
Anyway, I got this image from the Star Trek category, but honestly when I look at it for some reason I think of the new Attack on Titan t-shirts. Not just the size of Adonias but the framing and positioning. I wonder if the Attack on Titan makers are fans of Star Trek?
